New York City, August 2026. The Dominican Film Festival in New York (DFFNYC) celebrated the opening of its 15th edition at the emblematic United Palace in Washington Heights, Manhattan, with a full house that once again confirmed the strength of Dominican cinema in New York City.
The evening was marked by the world premiere of “La Fábrica de Bodas,” directed by Francis Disla “El Indio,” who attended alongside the cast of the film and notable figures including Canadian actress Jeena Wheeler.
The opening ceremony featured remarks by DFFNYC executive director Armando Guareño, who officially welcomed this new edition of the festival.
“Reaching our fifteenth year is a source of deep pride and gratitude. What began as a dream has become a cultural meeting place for Dominican cinema. This edition is a tribute to every filmmaker, actor and technical crew member who has believed in telling our stories with authenticity, and an invitation to new generations to continue writing the future of our cinema. We celebrate fifteen years, but we look ahead with the certainty that the best of Dominican cinema is yet to come.”
The gala was also attended by distinguished figures from public and cultural life in New York and the Dominican Republic, including Rafael Espinal, commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment of the City of New York; Celinés Toribio, ambassador, vice minister for Dominican Communities Abroad and executive director of INDEX; Council Member Carmen De La Rosa of District 10 in New York City; and former council member Ydanis Rodríguez.
With this opening, DFFNYC formally begins a week of programming that will run through August 11 and bring together more than 70 films, including world and international premieres, as well as official competitions, special presentations, free workshops and encounters among filmmakers, industry professionals and the public, under the slogan “Where stories create emotions.”
